Cologne Lights 2025
The Cologne Lights 2025 are one of the most spectacular pyro-musicals in Europe and attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the Rhine every year. On August 30, 2025, a 30-minute firework display will light up the silhouette of the cathedral and Old Town, accompanied by a specially composed soundtrack. If you want to enjoy the colorful spectacle stress-free, our quiet Oberwinter vacation apartment is the ideal retreat. Here you can combine a big city experience with the idyllic Rhine – book now and secure your box seat by the river!
Dates, program & tickets 2025
After the corona-related break in 2021-2023, the Cologne Lights are celebrating their big comeback and are starting with a themed motto: “Bridges of Light”. The convoy of around 50 illuminated passenger and freight barges will form up between Porz and Rodenkirchen from 7 pm. Live bands will play in parallel at the Tanzbrunnen and on the Rheinpark stage – “Querbeat” and the Rhein-Erft Philharmonic Orchestra have already been confirmed for 2020 and will provide the official soundtrack. The music-synchronized main fireworks display will be set off at 10:30 pm from five pontoons in the middle of the river. A new feature is the so-called “Silent Minute”: a 60-second section in which only silent effect bombettes and drone light images are used to reduce noise pollution for local residents and animals. Tickets cost €29 – €89 depending on the grandstand. The coveted KD ship tickets start at €149 and were sold out within 72 hours in 2024. Tip: If you are flexible, you can use the entire riverbank between Hohenzollern Bridge and Deutz Bridge free of charge. Here you have an authentic Cologne picnic atmosphere.
The five best viewpoints on the Rhine
**Rheinpark (Deutz)** – Spacious meadows, toilets and “Rheinterrassen” beer garden; ideal for families with children. **Hohenzollernbrücke** – The iconic Liebesschloss bridge offers a photo line-up with a cathedral backdrop, but is extremely windy during the fireworks. **Südbrücke** – Insider tip for Cologne’s photography scene: the steel girders draw dramatic lines, tripods are allowed, but watch out for bicycle traffic. **Poller Wiesen** – Pure festival feeling: street food trucks, mobile cocktail bars and relaxed sunbathing lawns; perfect view of the convoy of ships. **Cable car gondola** – For adrenaline junkies: float 35 m above the river, plus audio streaming of the soundtrack via app; advance booking only. You can easily reach all the spots from Oberwinter by S-Bahn or with your own bike on the Rhine cycle path. Plan at least a two-hour buffer: in 2024, the federal police counted around 280,000 visitors and had to close access points at times.
Arrival & shuttle options from Oberwinter
Thanks to ideal rail connections, you can take the RE 5 or RB 30 train from Oberwinter main station to Cologne every 30 minutes. The journey takes just under 40 minutes, so you can use the afternoon for sightseeing. For cycling fans, the 55 km Bonn→Cologne section of the Rhine Cycle Path is flat, well signposted and dotted with beer gardens where you can top up your water reserves. Our vacation apartment provides lockable bike boxes and free charging equipment for e-bikes. The night-time return journey on the KD ship “RheinEnergie” is particularly atmospheric: departure 23:30, arrival Bonn Brassertufer 00:30. From there, the night train takes you back in twelve minutes. Conveniently, your boat ticket is also valid as a VRS ticket. If you are traveling by car, you should use Park + Ride: Zoobrücke parking garage (€8/day) or Uni-Klinik (€5/day) and then take line 16 to Heumarkt.
Insider tips: Catering, safety, sustainability
Glass bottles and cans are prohibited in the safety ring; fill your favorite wine from the Ahr Valley in lightweight stainless steel bottles. Since 2024, the organizer has been using biodegradable PLA cups for the first time – you save € 1 deposit if you bring your own reusable cup. The pyrotechnicians use low-emission mixtures without perchlorates, which, according to TÜV Rheinland, produces up to 28% less particulate matter. For children, the city recommends ear muffs (at least 20 dB insulation). Pack a light picnic blanket instead of camping chairs. The stewards often remove bulky items from the aisle area. Stay in your seat for ten minutes after the final: the biggest wave of people will subside and you will reach platforms without crowds.
