Tour of Drachenburg Castle
A visit to Drachenburg Castle is like stepping into a fairy tale – golden spires, magnificent halls and a view as far as Cologne. Just 25 minutes from Oberwinter, a cultural experience with Instagram potential, selfie spots and historical depth awaits you. Ideal for half a day between architecture, nature and panoramic views – easily accessible by train or e-bike.
History & architecture: fairytale castle meets technology
Drachenburg Castle was built in just two years and cost the equivalent of around 140 million euros – financed by stock market speculator Stephan von Sarter. It already had steam central heating and a hydraulic elevator in 1885. The combination of neo-Gothic romanticism and Art Nouveau elements makes it unique. Highlights: an 80 m² stained glass window with a Siegfried motif, restored in its original colors – now an Instagram star with over 1.2 million reel views (as of 2024).
Arrival, tickets & opening hours 2025
From Oberwinter take the RB 27 to Königswinter (12 min), continue by cog railroad (8 min) or walk along the child-friendly Eselsweg (1.4 km, 160 m elevation gain).
